- Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda won the 55th World Press Photo of the Year award for an image of a veiled woman holding a wounded relative in her arms after a demonstration in Yemen. - Treasure, including tons of gold and silver coins, from the sunken 19th-century Spanish Navy frigate Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes returned to Spain on 25 February 2012 after being recovered by Florida-based salvage company Odyssey Marine Exploration in 2007. The Spanish treasure returned following a five-year legal battle in the United States between the Spanish government and the salvage company.[8]

- Spanish film director Alejandro Amenábar's film The Sea Inside, staring Spanish/Hollywood star Javier Bardem, won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. - Salomé, a Spanish singer, jointly won the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest for the song Vivo Cantando. For the first time in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest, the outcome of the voting resulted in a tie for the first place. Four countries gained 18 points each: France, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. Since there was no solution for this situation, all four countries were declared winners.[12]
